The Buffalo Hotel – Discover the History

March 12 @ 12:00 pm

Sessions are set for March 12th at noon, and March 18th at 7pm at the Finney County Museum, Mary Regan Conference Room.

Garden City’s historic Windsor Hotel is surrounded by a strong share of fame, but lots of local residents may never have heard of its predecessor and rival, the Buffalo Hotel. That will change for anyone who attends these history programs at the museum.

Presented by Museum Education Coordinator Johnetta Hebrlee, “The Buffalo Hotel” is designed to cover the past and potential future of the three-story limestone structure that still stands along the north side of Grant Avenue in the community’s downtown area.  Among various elements of the building’s story, Johnetta plans to explain how the business rivalry between Jones and Stevens during the 1880s led to both impressive structures.

The lecture series involves lunch hour segments at noon the second Wednesdays of the month and evening programs at 7 p.m. each third Tuesday. These lectures take place January-April and September-November.

The museum is located at 403 S. Fourth Street and those who attend should use the north entrance. Beverages and cookies will be provided, and listeners are welcome to bring their own lunch or dinner, if desired. The series is sponsored for the Finney County Historical Society by the Western Kansas Community Foundation.

For more information, contact the Finney County Historical Museum at (620) 272-3664
