Garden City is a unique community bursting with diversity. A community that has learned that, if we want something, we have to make it ourselves. For years, the community has hoped for a local brewpub. There are blueprints for several downtown buildings to make a brewhouse work, but it has never came to fruition, until now.
In 2017, three families, John and Angelica Chappel, Carlos and Carrye Jane Mantilla, and Jorge and Carmen Guzman came together with the goal of opening Garden City’s first brewery. A few things were important to us. First, we wanted a place on Main Street to help spark a revival in downtown activity. Second, we wanted a place where everyone could feel welcome. And finally, we wanted to be creative with both the beer and the food menus. From the beginning, the six of us admitted that our expertise in beer came in consuming it rather than making it. So, we reached out to a local community college instructor who had brewed beer at his house for roughly 10 years. 2018 was spent mostly in the construction phase and in the winter of 2019 the team and began developing a food menu.
The brewhouse had its first soft opening day on Monday, January 14, 2019. It opened to a huge success with the community welcoming us with open arms. With success came the natural need to grow. Rob Gardiner, someone who has grown up in the service industry, was brought in to manage the front of house, then later promoted to General Manager, and is now one of the head brewers.
It has been a wild ride already and we are extremely excited for what is to come. From our family to yours, thank you for visiting our brewery and welcome to The Little Brewhouse on the Prairie.
