HISTORY PRESENTATION APRIL 12 FOCUSING ON SUGAR BEET FARMING

Horticultural society hosting historical society presentation at grandstand meeting room

The community is welcome at a history presentation entitled “Sugar Beet Farming in Finney County,” scheduled at 7 p.m. April 12 in the Finney County Fairgrounds Grandstand Meeting Room, hosted by the High Plains Horticultural Society.

The monthly horticultural society meeting is open to members and the public, with a program offering historical pictures and information about the development, production and local impact of a crop that supported the area’s economy throughout the first half of the 20th Century. It will also focus on the sugar factory which operated at the southwest edge of Garden City from 1906 to 1955, becoming as a major employer for the region.

The program will be presented by Johnetta Hebrlee, education coordinator of the Finney County Historical Museum.

While the presentation serves as a key element of the horticultural society’s monthly meeting, it is also one of many community presentations offered year-round through the museum’s education program. In a typical year, the FCHS provides in-house tours and community presentations for 90 to 120 groups.

The horticultural society, created in 1987, works to promote the culture and improvement of botanical plants grown on the High Plains, as well as to support home and community beautification through plants and plantings, according to Eula Mae Galati, secretary-treasurer. The organization also conducts educational programs for the exchange of information, experience and ideas in horticulture; as well as promoting the economic value of plant use in the region.

The horticultural society meets the second Tuesday of each month, and anyone with questions may contact Galati at 620-276-3616.

The Finney County Historical Society, founded in 1948, operates the museum, preserves more than 18,000 cataloged artifacts, conducts research and carries on an extensive and growing education program. Historical society information is available at 620-272-3664.
