How to Get Reacquainted with the Garden City Waiting Just Outside Your Doors
No matter who you are, you have undoubtedly felt the impact from the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of us have never seen a pandemic like this in our lifetimes, and hopefully, we will not ever see one like it again.
As small pieces of the world begin to reopen, you might find yourself noticing things you never noticed. Walking trails, new corners of your neighborhood, colorful flowers you might have walked past before.
This article is going to talk about some of the ways you might be able to begin thinking about and appreciating all Garden City has to offer with fresh, post-pandemic eyes.
Hike a Trail
As our favorite bars and restaurants switch over to curbside and take out, you might find yourself spending more time outdoors. The most obvious place to do that in Garden City? The Talley Trail!
The Talley Trail extends 3.5 miles around and through Garden City. It is nicely paved and decorated with beautiful landscaping, along with seven shady gazebos. You’ll find benches if you need a rest, and a funshower water tower if you’re looking to cool off.
Try Geocaching
Geocaching is an excellent way to spend time outdoors. The basic idea is like a treasure hunt, where you hunt for an item or object that has been hidden in a certain spot by other cachers.
The geocaching app will provide your map to these buried treasures, via GPS coordinates.
Once you get close, however, the coordinates disappear and it is up to YOU to find the treasure (which can consist of a great many things, but will almost always include a logbook, where you can sign in stating that you, oh mighty geocacher, have found that particular cache).
If you like games and are looking for a fun outdoor activity that will help you explore the native area around Garden City, geocaching is it.
Become a Chalk Artist
We’re sure by now you’ve seen the beautiful color and messages of inspiration popping up all around Garden City. Now’s the perfect time to try it out yourself!
Look, let’s be honest, we could all use a bit of extra inspiration in times like this, so break out the kneepads and show us what you got.
Flowers, hopscotch, just a message saying ‘hi,’ no one is going to be walking around with blue ribbons. It doesn’t take much to add a bit of color to the lives of our neighbors.
Learn a TikTok Dance
If you’re older than 25 (or 20, or 15) you might not know what TikTok is. That’s okay.
TikTok is a video app where users post short videos and those videos are then ranked and pushed to more viewers according to their ranking.
But you don’t need to worry about that. What you need to know is that one of the most popular forms of videos on TikTok is a TikTok dance, which is a short dance segment over a clip of music.
That’s where you come in.
Take your favorite song. Take the best 30 seconds of it. Then choreograph a dance to it, film it, and send it around to everyone you know, encouraging them to do the same.
While this isn’t an outdoor activity like the rest of the list, it is one of the most fun, and you’ll be happy you did it.
Plant a Garden
Ralph Waldo Emerson said that ‘many eyes go through the meadow, but few see the flowers in it.’
Without so much to distract us, it just might be possible for us to look around our neighborhood and notice some of the flowers. And it not, well, maybe it’s time you plant some of your own.
Garden City was named after a beautiful garden. Perhaps you can make a contribution to help the city live up to that name.
Beautiful gardens are gifts, not only to those who plant them, but for everyone else who gets to see them as well.
Get out the Wheels
Not the car. We’re talking bikes, longboards, rollerskates. Whatever wheeled thing you’ve got gathering dust in your garage, which has been waiting for the nice day that somehow never comes around, now’s the time to bring it down.
The truth of the matter is, you miss things when you drive around. You move too fast and the world slides past your window.
When you’re riding something, you get all the sights, all the smells of the city. And gives you more reason to keep that bike of yours nice and oiled up for future rides.
Conclusion
Well, we hoped this help you think of some great things you can do to appreciate and explore Garden City while much of it is still locked down.
We think it’s far to assume that, once this is over, we’re all going to appreciate normal life just a little bit more. And maybe, we’ll learn something that makes us appreciate this time a little more too.
Stay safe.
